We’ll likely say it more than once, but if you are a marketer and ever have the opportunity to attend Inbound, you must! Don’t walk, run to this amazing conference taking place in Boston every year. In case you missed it or just need a recap, here are five key takeaways from Inbound 2017.

1. Create the Conditions for Creativity

Piera Gelardi of Refinery29 encourages her staff to discover what works best for them to create the conditions that will foster creativity. She believes laughter can unlock brilliance and that friction creates a spark. The bottom line is to find what works best for you, your team, and your company.

2. Email is Not Dead

Multiple sessions expounded on the fact that email is not dead, and if you’re not using it correctly then start doing so immediately. It still has the highest ROI of all marketing channels and over 3.7 billion users. A few tips we gathered during the conference include:

  • Stop creating boring emails, add more of a personality and a story to your emails
  • Try applying social media best practices to emails
  • Write great subject lines to increase your open rate

3. Break Barriers with Humor

Using humor in your marketing can help you break down barriers with your audience, while also catching their attention. Marketing with humor also creates a memorable experience and is a fascinating way to build a bridge with your audience and potential customers.

4. 95% of Marketers Have Dedicated Budget for Influencer Marketing

Influencer marketing is on the rise and the majority of influencers are women. Women are responsible for the rise of social media and digital influence according to Promise Phelon, CEO at TapInfluence. Millennial women are influencing the way things are being purchased in and around the home more than ever before and that’s thanks to influencers. Consider taking a dip in the influencer pond for your next campaign.

5. Be Aware of Your Cultural Conditioning

Rand Fishkin the Wizard of Moz at Moz, spoke about how our cultural conditioning and specific perspectives can affect how we do things every day. Whether you’re writing content, choosing keywords or optimizing a website, it’s important to understand how your cultural conditioning can affect those tasks. If at all possible try and take yourself out of the equation and lean more on research and data.
